The sleeping bags have been rolled up and the laptops have been put away. This must be the sign that camp is finally coming to a close. Today held our final meeting with Radio Arte, where we launched the website, showcased our poster, and unveiled our newly designed interior and exterior space of the main broadcasting booth. All were met with great appreciation and love from Radio Arte. We cannot thank Radio Arte enough for giving us young designers the opportunity to create designs that will grow and change their image for the next few years. You can see the finished projects and our adventures along the away on our flickr page.

Thanks to everyone who helped us on our way during this great week and a half, from the Firebelly staff – Dawn, Antonio, Will, Keith, Darren, and Shannon. To the many who’ve helped us build and achieve the projects including Rick Valicenti, Jason from Delicious Design League, Jason from Bright Bright Great, The Post Family crew, Chris from Someoddpilot, and the many other new friends we’ve had the opportunity to meet. I think I can speak for the rest of the campers when I say this has been one of the most exciting, challenging, and awesome projects we’ve had the pleasure to be a part of.

Thanks again to Firebelly for opening their doors, hearts, and air mattresses for us! And letting us create some great work for a great cause!

This is it…last night as a camper at Firebelly. The website is done, the poster is signed, and the space is rockin’. What an amazing 10 days with an amazing group of designers and people. This, for me at least is going to be one of those things moments in my design life I will not forget.
We will see tomorrow how excited Radio Arte is with everything we have done over the past ten days, but if their response is anything like the one we got from The Post Family tonight, we will be in good shape!
The Post Family came in to view our Collab-o-rama projects, everyone was unique, and effective! We spanned the board as far as projects go, but all really well done and engaging.
For the last ten days, we have; had a client meeting, mood board, client pitch, revisions, screen printing, web-design, interior graphics, interior design, exterior graphics, CD cover, and our Collab-o-rama. And thats only the projects!
The group of people it takes to put on a large camp like this is astonishing. Dawn and her crew really stretch out into the design community and pull in some big names to spend time with us and teach us what they know.
As far as the campers, this group of designers will go on and out. They will all do different things with this experience, but one thing is for sure, we are all better for having the opportunity to spend that last ten days with Firebelly.

Everything I Needed to Know (about coding), I Learned at Camp Firebelly

When we received our assignments last week, I was really excited to be on the website team. Not only was it great to get to work with the others in my group and Jason Schwartz, among other guests, but I was really looking forward to getting to help code the site. After an intense weekend crash-course-marathon-coding-event, I have come to one conclusion: Keith is Awesome.

Now, I don’t want to suggest that any of the other Camp Staff members are any less awesome than Keith… (A special thanks goes out to Dawn for having us, Will for helping/learning along with our team, Antonio for supplying a great stock of movies, and his girlfriend for the most delicious cupcakes in Chicago.) However, over the course of the past weekend, Keith has managed to accomplish what two semesters of web-design classes were never able to do in college: I now feel like I understand what I am doing. How did he accomplish such a miraculous feat? Why, with Four Mind-Blowing Revelations. I now present for your consideration the 4 MBR’s:

Crash Course/Ordered vs Unordered Lists

The first night , Keith totally blew my mind by giving us a brief overview of the basics of laying out a website in code to get it ready for styling in css. Prominently featured was an explanation of Ordered vs Unordered Lists. Is the order of the items in your list necessary for understanding the list? For example , are you outlining the steps of assembling your own golf cart? Then use an Ordered List. Are the items in your list just listed in a certain order, but not necessarily need to be in that order? Use an Unordered List.

The Subtle Art of Hiding Text

Have an image with some text on it and think you don’t have to type that text in the html? Wrong! Including the copy in the html and then hiding it is essential for SEO and Accessibility. To do this, Keith taught us his not-so-secret ways of subtly making said copy disappear. Magic!

Image vs Image

Much like the Ordered vs Unordered List revelation, Keith made the issue of Image versus Background Image easy as pie . It seems that if your image relates to the content of the page, then it needs to fit into an image tag. But, but! If your image relates to the style of the page, then it needs to be set as a background image.

…and last, but certainly not least, A Brief History of html, xml, and xhtml Languages

Did you know that xhtml was created because the Powers That Be thought that coders were being too sloppy with their html? Or that xhtml is ultimately falling out of use because the browsers themselves are lazy? The future of html is looking pretty bright and HTML5 promises to be better than ever. How could it not be with a proposed tag?? Here are a few that I would like to see: , , and

By this time, things were getting a bit loopy due to lack of sleep . Strange comments were known to have been overheard. I started making really bad analogies such as comparing the relationship between divs, margins, and padding to a padded white room. Finally, the coder hand-signs started getting busted out. And let me tell you, the site is looking pretty darn good: get excited…because we are. <!-- and that is NOT a <sarcasm> comment despite looking towards no sleep until the end of camp…I may be biased in favor of it, but you really will like it once it’s done. –> Off to go watch a movie and get my rock band on…even busy campers need a break.

Today started off with a bounty of french toast a la Antonio. After breakfast, teams space and poster headed down to Radio Arte to paint the broadcast studio in preparation for applying the vinyl graphics. From what I heard, there was no AC, and much drywall patching was needed, but fun was had by all anyway. Although apparently the general feeling was of being in a zoo because people passing by kept looking in the windows to investigate.

I would not know about these things, because I was back at the studio taking part in CODE FEST 2009!!! Keith, our fearless leader, directed us in a day of marathon coding in an attempt to get further along on the website. Many revelations were had, much css was written, many photoshop files were hacked to pieces.

After everyone returned from Radio Arte, we were treated to a delicious diner at Treat, a contemporary American restaurant with Indian influences. We sat outside on the patio and ate wonderful food while the wind blew and giant shade umbrellas loomed ominously over our heads.

Once returning home, Rock Band made an appearance, but, alas, CODE FEST 2009 continued. As I coded with my fellow website friends in the back room we could hear the sounds of Coldplay and Bonnie Tyler through the door. As I write this, campers are wrestling with the musical stylings of Offspring. This could continue into the wee hours…

Whoa. We did a lot of stuff today.

Last night, finally, we all got some sleep (not just those measly naps disguised as sleep) After breakfast, we all hopped in the van and headed to meet with Chris Eichenseer of Some Odd Pilot. Before arriving, however, we all serenaded Anna’s mom with a bland, but earnest rendition of happy birthday.

After arriving at the studio, we wasted no time in getting to work on potential album covers for the Chicago-based band Hey Champ. Chris came around and helped us each individually with our ideas, while we worked frantically to complete our concepts and execute them before 6pm.

Soul food-ish lunch via Wishbone was delicious. Corn bread, sweet potatoes, black bean cakes, green beans, and mac and cheese. I def went for seconds.

The tight deadline and creative environment gave us the gunpowder we needed to blow that sh*t out of the water. We finished up around 6:30 with a final presentation and critique. Everyone did awesome. Ideas included dead birds, lotto tickets, toy soldiers, viewfinders, and a goldfish in a bag. Can you see how incredible this is going to be? (-hang gliding, come on!)

Back at the studio, we set up the big screen and watched Fear[s] of the dark, a black and white series of short and scary anime films. Some awkward moments (unavoidable considering the massive size of the screen), but we’re all family here.

Brilliant Chicago-style pizza, then an adventure through the secret garden to Believe Inn where we experienced Impossible to See the Whole Thing at the Same Time, a show of work by David Horvitz of New York. (Among the many services he offers via snail mail, he also offers to sit in silence and think about you for one minute exactly for one US dollar.)

On the way back, we stopped at Cafe Gelato for some of the best gelato I’ve ever had. Granted, I’ve never had gelato, but I can’t imagine ever finding a tastier rendition. I had chocolate and tiramasu.

Back at the studio, we all decided to watch the incredibly chilling French thriller, Them. It was disturbing. Apparently it’s based on a true story revolving around some disturbed children in Eastern Europe who started committing gruesome murders. I have researched these rumors and found no evidence to verify them.

To lighten the mood, some of us then watched one of the best anime movies ever, Tekkonkinreet. It was absolutely beautiful. Descriptions courtesy of Antonio.

it is now 4 AM. tomorrow we will be coding and painting at radio arte. the last two days have been awesome and relaxing, but tomorrow it’s back to work!

goodnight all!

After a long but hilarious night of working on the window decals for Radio Arte’s space we all got to sleep for a little bit wake up and start a new day.

At 10 the campers split in half. Chad and Davey from The Post Family came by to check on our progress for their Collab-O-Stormia! We checked out some inspiring sites and brainstormed our ideas. The other half headed to Delicious Design League to screenprint the posters for Radio Arte.

Veggie dogs and burgers for lunch then a switcheroo for the groups.

Jason from Delicious showed us the ropes of screenprinting and we all got to throw in a hand helping finish the third color on the posters. And they were so kind to let us a take a few of their posters home for our walls.

We relaxed for a bit then headed out to Cafe Ba Ba Reeba for some amazing tapas. Also to sing happy birthday to fellow camper Ben who turned 23 today! Then it was back to base camp to relax a little, play some video games, and work on ideas for our assignment with Someoddpilot.

Following our late night dinner, we hit the ground running again to incorporate the feedback received at yesterday’s client meeting. All of us were up well into the morning hours pushing our designs and stamina to new limits. We woke up this morning to the delicious smells of Dawn’s Daily Special – one of the few things that could motivate us to get up after our very late night. But, our hard work and sleepless night was totally worth it, as we began the day knowing we were on our way toward our final client presentation at 3:30. Each group felt they were making good progress and worked tirelessly through the morning and afternoon (fueled by tomato & bacon grilled cheeses and plenty of caffeine) to prepare for our meeting with the Radio Arte ladies. The web, poster and interior space design crews all presented their progress to our anxious and excited clients who were thrilled by the work we’d done in the last 24 hours.

Dawn commemorated our success by handing out another Camp Firebelly Pin (with shiny gold stars) to add to our growing collections – and authentic scout sashes to attach them to! We got ready for the AIGA Chicago Annual Meeting and headed downtown to the Art Institute’s Modern Wing, all 10 of us sporting our Camp Firebelly sashes. Needless to say, they were quite the conversation piece as designers and creatives from across the city asked us about our sashes and the button’s on them, as well as what we were doing at camp. All of them loved the sashes, most of them were shocked to find out we were actually sleeping, eating and showering at the Firebelly Studio. We were able to attend the event through the generosity of AIGA, and are all very thankful as it proved to be a great networking opportunity.

Awesome night downtown, now time to chill and relax, right? Not here at Camp Firebelly my friends. Having returned from our venture into the Loop, we are already back to work – as production for the poster and interior space begin tomorrow! Like the last few nights, we’ll be fueled by passion, caffeine and the occasional cookie break. The soundtrack to our work this evening will, of course, be the vocal stylings of Michael Jackson. It’s gonna be another late night here, but I’ll leave it to tomorrow’s blogger to report who among us is the best moonwalker…

Have a great night!

after a long evening, lasting until five am, we went to bed with no electricity.

(summer in the city is hot.)

the sun wakes us up, and our adventure continues. losing electricity in the summer reminded me of free grocery store ice cream, and board games in the basement. those memories were quickly erased when i realized how much work needed to be done. thankfully our group’s ideas greatly progressed the evening before, and we would use the rest of the day was meeting with radio arte’s silvia and refining our concepts. disillusioned by the brown out (no computers?! oh, no!), our team decided to sketch before taking a trip over to pilsen, where radio arte is located. being inside their studio inspired and reaffirmed why we were doing what we were doing. radio arte is condensed with passionate people working together making something beautiful. we work for a couple of hours making mocks of the studio space and discussing the aspects of the concept that would be highly considered for the final execution.

following lunch, antonio, rachel, and i drove over to coloprhonics (printing, vinyl studio) where we met peter. peter runs colorphonics, and he is printing the vinyl graphics that would be applied to the windows of radio arte’s studio. he showed us the large format printers and vinyl cutters and taught us the pros and cons of using mesh and solid vinyl.

leaving colorphonics thankful and with invaluable information, we drove back to pilsen to regroup with the others and inform them about what we’ve learned. rick valicenti greeted us and helped us progress in our concept. we were re so grateful to rick for taking out the time to help us explore new and different angles of the project. with new ideas to consider, we continued to work on designing the studio space until five, where we would present our concepts to four members of the radio arte team. over all, the presentation went really well, and we got positive feedback as well as constructive criticism that would help us move on to the final design.

with the initial presentation with radio arte behind us, we were on to our next location: someoddpilot. there we met chris. he gave us an extensive and energetic presentation on album covers, from the very good, to the very awful (a.k.a. bangles best of album) after which he presented our next assignment. we were instructed to use the things we learned during his presentation and make an album cover for the pop trio hey champ.

we left someoddpilot feeling inspired, motivated, and hungry (we skipped dinner to make it in time to meet chris). dawn cooked some amazing pesto, pea, and pasta concoction that would leave no one fully satiated.

it’s one o’clock and there’s still many things to get accomplished before anyone can lay down on our beds of air.
